Hampton Park Scout Group

Discovering Adventure

All Joeys will follow their own personal path through the section and will achieve different outcomes. However, there is a core of achievement that all of the Joeys will work towards.

Introduction to Scouting and Introduction to Section

When we receive your first inquiry to attend Joeys, we will direct you to some background information about Scouting and during your child's 4 trial visits we will cover some basic aspects of the What, How and Why of Scouting and also some information about our group. When they are formally invested, they will receive their scarf and their initial badges - the World Scout badge, the Australian flag badge, the Central Swan District badge, the Hampton Park name tag and the Introduction to Section badge.

Milestones

All Joeys will be working on a specific milestone - 1, 2 or 3 - depending on their age when joining Joeys. Progression through these Milestones is through Participation in activities across 4 Challenge areas - Community, Outdoors, Creative and Personal Growth, plus increasing opporunities to assist and lead the other members.

OAS - Outdoor Adventure Skills

There are 9 different Outdoor adventures with 3 core skills and 6 specialist skills. These are Bushcraft, Bushwalking and Camping and then Alpine, Cycling, Vertical, Aquatics, Boating and Paddling. The Joeys will work on some of these skills through our regular meetings, but they may also be able to demonstrate these skills through other activities outside of Joeys. Provided we have some evidence of their achievements - eg swimming certificates, then we can recognise those requirements that have been achieved elsewhere. These Outdoor adventures start at the Joey level and can progress through 9 different stages to extremely high levels of competence, in their years of scouting to Rovers at age 26.

SIA - Special Interest Areas

The Joeys can personalise their Scouting achievements by completing individual projects of 2 hours that are of interest to them. They set their own goals, identify what they would like to do, have it approved by Unit Council and then report back to the Unit about what they have done and how it went. There are planning sheets attached here that can be used for the SIAs.

Adventurous Journey

Joeys who are wanting to achieve their peak award are required to plan, participate in and lead (to their ability level) and review a 3 hr Adventurous Journey with other Joeys and leaders. These journeys can be a hike, a bkie ride or maybe even a canoe ride but they need to be people powered and not travelling by mechanical means of transport.

Reflections

With each step on their progression and again at the end of their Joey time, the youth have opportunities to reflect on what they have done, how they feel they have developed and what they think they would like to do for any future events. This review and self awareness is vital to their future planning.

Not all Joeys will aim for their Peak Award and that is fine - it is their Journey. However, they will all have opporunities to have fun. learn lots and to achieve their potential.
